The Monthly Website Maintenance Checklist for Small Business

Anthony7 May 2026

A simple, practical monthly checklist to keep your small business website fast, secure, and working hard for you — without needing to be technical.

The Monthly Website Maintenance Checklist for Small Business

Your website isn't a 'set and forget' thing. A little regular attention keeps it fast, secure, and reliably turning visitors into customers. The good news? You don't need to be technical — you just need a routine.

Here's a practical monthly checklist any small business owner can follow.

Why monthly maintenance matters

A neglected website slowly degrades. Plugins go out of date, links break, content goes stale, and security gaps appear. Left long enough, small issues become big ones — a broken contact form that's been silently losing you leads for months is the classic example.

Spending an hour a month on maintenance prevents the kind of problems that cost real money.

Your monthly checklist

1. Check that everything works

  • Submit a test enquiry through your contact form — does it actually arrive?
  • Click through your main navigation — any broken links?
  • Test your site on your phone — does it look and work right?
  • Complete a test purchase if you have an online store

2. Update everything

  • Install platform updates (WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace)
  • Update plugins, themes, and extensions
  • Check that updates didn't break anything (re-run step 1)

3. Back up your site

  • Confirm your backup ran this month
  • If you don't have automatic backups, set them up — this is non-negotiable
  • Occasionally download a copy to keep offline

4. Review speed and security

  • Run your site through a speed test — is it still fast?
  • Check for any security warnings in your browser or platform dashboard
  • Remove any unused plugins, themes, or user accounts

5. Freshen your content

  • Update any outdated info — prices, hours, team, services
  • Add or update at least one piece of content (a blog post, news, or new images)
  • Check your homepage still reflects what you offer

6. Look at the numbers

  • Glance at your analytics — is traffic steady, dropping, or growing?
  • Check for any error pages visitors are hitting
  • Note anything you want to improve next month

Quarterly extras

Every three months, go a little deeper:

  • Review your SEO — are your key pages still ranking?
  • Test your site on different devices and browsers
  • Review your hosting — is it still the right fit?
  • Check your domain renewal date

Don't want to do it yourself?

That's fair. Most small business owners didn't start their business to maintain a website. The mistake is assuming the only alternative is an expensive monthly retainer with an agency.
