SHOPIFY ECOMMERCE
Shopify vs WordPress for an Australian Small Business
By Anthony · · 7 min read
Shopify and WordPress are both excellent, but they are built for different jobs. Choosing the right one early saves time, money and a painful rebuild later.
When Shopify is the better fit
- Selling products online is the main purpose of the site
- You want hosting, security and checkout handled for you
- You need reliable inventory, shipping and payment tools
- You plan to grow your product range over time
When WordPress is the better fit
- Your website is mainly about services, content and enquiries
- You want flexible page layouts and a blog
- You need integrations such as bookings or forms
- You sell a small number of products alongside services
Running costs
Shopify charges a monthly plan plus transaction-related fees, and some apps add their own subscriptions. WordPress needs hosting, a domain, and regular plugin and security updates. Neither is free to run, so factor ongoing costs into the decision.
Ease of day-to-day editing
Both platforms let you update products and pages yourself once they are set up well. The difference usually comes down to how carefully the site was built and how clearly it was handed over.
